Before you apply

Is your role eligible for the volunteer rate?

The discounted $21 rate is reserved for genuine unpaid volunteering — not every unpaid role qualifies, so check the criteria below first.

You’re eligible for a volunteer check if you:
  • Hold the position or perform the role voluntarily for the common good
  • Are not an employee or contractor, and receive no salary or entitlements beyond reimbursed out-of-pocket expenses
  • Are a student undertaking a compulsory unpaid vocational placement as part of an Australian educational institution’s training course
Not eligible for the volunteer rate:
  • Tenancy (rental) applications
  • Social media platform participation
  • Insurance-related purposes
  • Placing an au pair or overseas student in a family home
  • Participation in television productions
  • Family day care providers operating on a commercial basis
  • Australian Government Work for the Dole Scheme

If your role doesn’t meet the volunteer criteria, you’ll need the standard Employment NCCHC instead.

What you’ll need

Evidence of your volunteer placement

Because the volunteer rate is discounted, ACIC requires proof that your role is genuinely unpaid.

Proof of volunteering letter
A confirmation letter from the organisation you volunteer with, stating your unpaid role.
Valid ID documents
Such as passport, driver licence, Medicare card or birth certificate.
A usable device
A phone, tablet or computer with internet access.
A camera
A phone or webcam to complete the selfie identity check.

Worker Checks pricing includes GST with no additional processing or transaction fees at checkout — the price shown is what you pay. Competitor prices and turnaround times are approximate, reflect each provider’s public information (July 2026), and are a general guide only. Some competitors advertise a lower base price but add GST and/or transaction fees at checkout. Always confirm the final checkout total directly with each provider before applying. Government providers (AFP, state police) are GST-exempt.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do volunteers have to pay for a police check in Australia?
Yes, but at a discounted rate. ACIC-accredited providers charge a reduced fee for genuine unpaid volunteers — with Worker Checks this is $21 inc. GST, compared to $52 for an employment check. The check itself is not free, but it is significantly cheaper than the standard rate.
How much does a volunteer police check cost?
Among ACIC-accredited providers, volunteer NCCHCs typically range from $21 to $69 inc. GST. Worker Checks charges $21 with no additional fees at checkout, among the lowest rates available.
What’s the difference between an employment and volunteer police check?
Both are the same Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check drawing on the same national database — the only difference is price and eligibility. The volunteer rate is reserved for genuine unpaid roles and requires evidence of your volunteering placement; it cannot be used for paid employment.
What evidence do I need to prove I’m a volunteer?
A proof of volunteering letter or volunteer confirmation letter from the organisation you’re volunteering with, confirming your role is unpaid. You’ll upload this during your application.
Can students on a placement get the volunteer rate?
Yes. Students undertaking a compulsory unpaid vocational placement as part of an Australian educational institution’s training course are eligible for the discounted volunteer rate.
Is a Work for the Dole check eligible for the volunteer rate?
No. The volunteer rate cannot be used for the Australian Government’s Work for the Dole Scheme — that requires a different check type.
How long does a volunteer police check take?
Approximately 80% of checks are completed within 1–3 minutes. Around 20% are referred for ACIC manual review and may take 1–15 business days.
Can our organisation manage volunteer checks in bulk?
Yes. Worker Checks offers BusinessHub, a free workforce screening portal for charities and community groups — supporting bulk invitations, compliance tracking, and automated expiry reminders at no setup cost.
