Screening requirements for aged care workers
Aged care workers must complete mandatory screening before commencing work. Requirements vary depending on your role, whether your employer is an NDIS-registered provider, whether you work with NDIS participants, and whether you engage in supervised or unsupervised care.
What is an Aged Care Check?
Aged care screening confirms a person’s suitability to work with vulnerable older Australians and includes:
- National criminal history
- Previous misconduct
- Disciplinary and regulatory findings (if applicable)
Types of screening for aged care
1. Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC)
Used to assess Australian criminal history. Accepted for most aged care roles.
2. NDIS Worker Screening Check (NDIS WSC)
Recognised in aged care. Required if you work with NDIS participants or in risk-assessed NDIS roles. NDIS WSC assesses:
- National criminal history
- Reportable incidents
- Disciplinary proceedings
- Misconduct and complaint findings
Current aged care screening requirements
| Role | Screening Requirement |
|---|---|
| Staff working with NDIS participants | NDIS Worker Screening Check |
| Staff NOT working with NDIS participants | Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check |
| Role | Screening Requirement |
|---|---|
| All aged care staff | Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check |
| Staff who previously worked with NDIS participants | Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check |
Legislative requirements for aged care & disability screening
Aged Care Act 1997 & Aged Care Principles
Approved Providers must ensure:
- A current National Police Check (< 12 months old)
- The individual provides full name, DOB, issue date and certificate reference
- Anyone with a precluding offence (murder, sexual assault, or assault with imprisonment) cannot work in aged care
- Police checks are renewed every 12 months
- Workers notify the provider of new convictions
International Police Checks — When Required
Best practice: workers who lived overseas in the last 10 years should provide:
- An International Police Check for each country lived in >3 months
- A statutory declaration confirming no overseas precluding offences
Record keeping obligations for aged care providers
Approved Providers must maintain records of the following. Worker Checks’ free Business Workforce Portal handles all compliance storage, reminders and monitoring.
