FAQs

Why get a WA Police Check?

You are most likely to be asked for a police check WA before you accept an offer of employment or if you are seeking to join a volunteer organisation. More and more organisations around Australia are choosing to institute a standard procedure for new employees and members which requests a criminal background check before a formal offer or acceptance is given. This ensures that the services these organisations provide, and the environments they build, continue to remain safe and enjoyable for everyone. For example, you may be required to undergo a national police history check for the Department of Education WA if you intend to be affiliated with them in either a professional or volunteer capacity.

Traditionally, to request a criminal record check, you would have to fill out multiple paper-based forms and submit them, along with verified copies of your ID, in person. Workerchecks offers applicants a completely online application process. Our online form is designed to be intuitive and easy to submit. Workerchecks verify your identification documents online. When you have finished your application form and it is fully compliant with government standards, Workerchecks can submit it to the central government database. You can complete the entire process in a single sitting.

In roughly 30% of cases, however, your national police clearance can be delayed, as it requires additional review by the relevant state police force. Typically, your national clearance certificate is received between 1 and 15 business days later, as this requires an official to sight and allocate a potential match.

This occurs when part or all of an applicant’s information matches in the central government database so the information must be manually sighted before the national police clearance check WA may be released. If your express application is flagged and delayed, you can expect it to be released between 1 and 15 business days.

Standard police check processing

In most cases, you’ll receive your Worker Checks National Police Check result and email to download your certificate within 1 hour of your check being submitted online.

Why is my check taking longer?

Police checking is a partially manual, name-based process, so some checks take longer to process than others. When an application is submitted for processing, your name and date of birth are run against a central database to find any potential matches throughout Australia with people who have police information. For example, if a record of someone with name and date-of-birth details similar to yours is found in the police check database, your check would be referred for manual processing (completed by a person as opposed to being done electronically).

If you haven’t received your check result after 10 business days, feel free to call us on 1300 609 970 or email us at [email protected]

Some police check applications sent for manual processing are currently undergoing delays due to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) National Police Checking Service experiencing unprecedented demand.
